"Finding the right program or intervention to meet a family's needs is like shopping for a new outfit. You might get lucky and find the perfect fit in the first shop you enter. Or you might need to try on a few before finding one that really suits, or go to several shops before being able to buy. Sometimes you go home empty handed because there is nothing that meets your needs...".

"The Society for Prevention Research is committed to the advancement of prevention science and the training of prevention researchers. As part of SPR’s strategic plan and under the leadership of then President Zili Sloboda, the SPR Board of Directors appointed a task group that included researchers and practitioners, to define prevention science and the type of research that falls within this definition, as well as prepare a document that begins to outline specific training needs for new prevention researchers. The Standards of Knowledge for the Science of Prevention (click here for full document) developed by this task group puts forth a set of shared standards for training that is comprehensive and relevant both to prevention researchers and prevention practitioners. We hope, through this work, to facilitate a greater understanding of prevention science and aid in the training of prevention researchers. As with any evolving field of study, this report is considered a “living document” that will, by necessity, be updated as we learn more about the design and delivery of prevention interventions and advance research design and statistical methodologies to improve our understanding of the key operational elements of effective preventive interventions."

"This study examines the relationship between underage alcohol possession and criminal behavior through a cohort, age, and period analysis. Utilizing the Age–Period Cohort Characteristic (APCC) models method and national arrest data, while controlling for age and period effects, this study examined single-year age cohorts and determines that strict enforcement of PULA (Possession Under Legal Age) laws decreases the likelihood of strongly correlated vandalism and assaults as young adults. The analysis indicates an increase in assaults and vandalism as cohort size increases, but little effect from single parent, resource deprivation".

"Synopsis:Over the last twenty years a significant body of work has sought to better understand the nature and extent of arms trade and gun violence across different contexts. In the last decade there has also been an increasing interest in developing effective violence prevention strategies which include a major focus on the prevention of gun violence and reducing its negative impacts. However, there remains strikingly little information on the numbers and circumstances- physical, mental, economic, social or political – of those who survive gun violence with injuries, impairments and trauma. The webinar will explore this knowledge gap and some of the consequences for practice and policymaking; possible contributions that social scientists, health researchers, advocates and practitioners can make on this issues and a brief overview of the Surviving Gun Violence Project whichis supported by the Government of Norway."
