When two evaluation methods are available, which to use? A recent paper argues that while both Randomized Control Trials are preferable they are often not practical and therefore Quasi Experimental Designs are often relied on.

In its approach to implementing crime prevention programs based on proven scientific knowledge, Public Safety’s National Crime Prevention Centre (NCPC) published the first volume ofPromising and Model Crime Prevention Programsin 2008.
As part of its ongoing effort to promote and disseminate information and knowledge on effective crime prevention programs, strategies and initiatives, the NCPC is pleased to present Volume II (electronic version only).
Whereas the first volume contained very little Canadian specific information, nearly half of the descriptions in Volume II are about programs either developed or successfully replicated in Canada!
This compendium, a reference tool for all those concerned with reducing delinquency, violence and insecurity through prevention, contains some 20 new descriptions of innovative, promising and model prevention programs.
The purpose of these two volumes is to provide inspiration for the implementation of effective crime prevention practices and policies.
The Web site is a resource to help practitioners and policymakers understand what works in justice-related programs and practices. It includes information on more than 150 justice-related programs and assigns ratings that indicate whether a program achieves its goals.
Office of Justice Programs Assistant Attorney General Laurie Robinson said, “CrimeSolutions.gov helps us take a ‘smart on crime’ approach that relies on data-driven, evidence-based analysis to identify and replicate justice-related programs that have shown real results in preventing and reducing crime and serving crime victims.”

The 'Connections' project (2007-2010) was managed by the University of Kent and co-funded by the European Commission Public Health Programme. It focused on the potential for partnerships within criminal justice systems of the EU Member States to develop joined-up responses to drugs and related-infections, particularly HIV/AIDS and hepatitis.
The three year project facilitated the introduction and promotion - at national and European level - of more effective, comprehensive, evidence-based policies and services to respond to drugs and infections in prison and within the wider context of the criminal justice system. Public health and human rights based approaches and priorities guided the project towards the promotion of comprehensive continuity of care.
After four years of intensive development, testing, and vetting—including interviewing 66,000 people and over 2000 experts in 66 countries—the World Justice Project is ready to publicly release the second annual WJP Rule of Law Index™.
The Index provides detailed information and original data regarding a variety of dimensions of the rule of law, which enables stakeholders to assess a nation’s adherence to the rule of law in practice, identify a nation’s strengths and weaknesses in comparison to other countries, and track changes over time.
The WJP Rule of Law Index™ 2011 report, the second of an annual series, was released on June 13, 2011 in Washington, DC and will be presented next week at the World Justice Forum III in Barcelona, Spain.
In the attempt to gather information on the role and action of local authorities in crime prevention and community safety in a systematic manner, ICPC is pleased to announce the official launch of the Global Survey on Safety in Cities.
The survey is the first of its kind and seeks to collect vital information about community safety and crime prevention in cities. It will offer the first database on safety in cities around the world, which will facilitate comparative analyses of local initiatives. The survey will also be a tool available for policy makers to reflect on existing practices to improve the quality of life of their citizens.
ICPC is convinced that prevention strategies undertaken by local authorities, particularly by cities, as well as available data on these strategies are essential to the well-being of populations.
The survey is valuable for ICPC’s work as it will be a tool for analysis for the Centre and will also be used in the upcoming International Report on the prevention of crime. Therefore, ICPC is requesting for your collaboration to answer to this survey and to distribute it to your networks.
The survey is designed to be responded by individuals who are in charge or work closely within local, municipal or city programmes on crime prevention, reduction or are in charge of public safety departments. The survey will require about twenty minutes of your time.
The questionnaire is available online in English, French, Spanish & Portuguese (to be completed by August 31).
