Social control is not limited to the prevention or suppression of crime. It covers the mechanisms by which a society exercises its authority over the people of whom it comprises and it succeeds in getting them to obey their laws. It serves to promote conformity and safeguards the continued existence of the social system. Amongst other means of social control are religion, morals, law, knowledge, upbringing and social therapy. Crime control is specifically linked to the adherence to criminal law standards.
