The 5Is Framework for Crime Prevention
What´s it about?
5Is seeks to transfer practical experience in crime prevention, by facilitating the successful replication of successful projects, sensitising project planners to the context-dependency of crime prevention, and fostering theory-based innovation. To this end, 5Is (Intelligence, Intervention, Implementation, Involvement, and Impact) presents a set of detailed working-tasks. It can also be used as a conceptual schema for the training of practitioners and a means of organising crime prevention theory.
What´s included?
5Is describes the five principal tasks of project-development: Intelligence: The collection and analysis of information on the problem and its causes and consequences, suitable target groups, existing measures, supporters and possibilities of implementation. Intervention: Measures for eliminating, interrupting, or weakening the causes of the problem, covering prevention goals (which problem is to be prevented), principles of intervention (which link in the causal chain is to be addressed), and prevention methods (which practical method is used to do so). Implementation: Implementation of the principles of intervention and of the prevention methods, regarding input, process and process management, output and documentation. Attention is to be given to – inter alia - the ecological level (individual to societal) and the concrete target group, the temporal and geographical framework, possible trade-offs, and the measure’s effectiveness and efficiency. Involvement: Identification, mobilisation, and motivation of partners to support or participate in the intervention, including the population at large or selected groups. Impact: Description of the processes, results, and experiences during the preceding four steps, scientific proof of the measure’s effect on the problem including logically necessary intermediate steps within the causal chain.
